Everyone has a least one bad work experience in their life, whether it be the job itself, the people you work with, or the cliental you have to deal with, there is no perfect job out there, or at least none that I have heard about. When comparing why good employees quit with sports there are similar situations with every point. The reasons are as follows:
1. Poor Reward Systems: Reward can be shown in multiple ways, not only with paychecks but also with internal and external rewards. Internal and external rewards include mini paid vacations, bonuses, bump in pay, and more opportunities with promotions. However, even with all these different promotions communication is the key for all them.
In a sports situation the reward system can be very different. Playing time is a reward for doing well on the field, as well as the chance of being promoted to captain. A player has to be coached, and know what the coach is looking for. Without this communication from the coach to the players they will not be able to play the formation, or the style that they may be trying to achieve.
2. Management: The saying is “People don’t leave companies, they leave their managers.” Management’s duty is to keep the employees satisfied and loyal with enforcing, engaging and implementing the reward system. However, not because you may be good at your job doesn't mean that you will be good at managing people.
The same is true in sports. Michael Jordan is a prime example of being one of the best players in sports, but not being a successful coach. Some of the best players in sports can’t coach because their expectation level of people they are coaching are as high as the expectations that were shown to them. Coaches can cause players to leave quicker than the team themselves. My most recent experience with a team wasn't a very positive one. The lack of knowledge, and execution for the talent that the coach had at his finger tips and didn't take advantage of caused the quitting of a quarter of the team at the time.
3. Hiring/ Promotions: Employees will start leaving when they see other people who don’t work as hard, or who know as much as them in the job getting hired/promoted. They don’t take vacation, they constantly take shifts at work to help others, and receive nothing in return.
In sports, seeing people getting recruited for a team that are not as talented and lazy not only getting on the team, but also getting playing time that may be more than you is frustrating and discouraging. Being discouraged as an athlete can make or break ones sports career. Confidence is the hardest things for athlete to be able to keep, no matter what your sport, or how great of a player you are.
4. Too much work: When management sees that an employee always gets their job done and get it done successfully they begin to rely more on this employee. This can lead to a lot of extra work and projects being thrown onto an employee. Employees can start to feel like they can’t get a break from work and get overwhelmed because of this, which can lead to not getting the work done.
When you prove to be reliable in not only a job but also with a position on a team a coach relays on you more. He/she will start expecting more out of you every practice, and game. If the player is not able to perform under this pressure his/her confidence starts deteriorating. When the confidence starts leaving, so does the motivation.
In 2007 my club soccer team was #1 in Maryland, and both regionally and nationally ranked. Not only were we a team for less making such great achievements, but we were also playing up an age group. Everywhere we played people came up to us wanting to know who this team was, coming out of no where winning so many tournaments and climbing up in rankings. However, because one parent of one of the nationally ranked players on the team thought there was bigger and better things for his daughter he tore the team apart by getting in the coaches ear and convincing him to drop down in age groups, which caused use to lose half of our team. No matter where, there is always someone or something making a job or team have more problems than there should be and not allowing something great to possibly happen. However, when dealing with people, that is only natural.
Just Kicking It,
